  • 12 Oct 1901: For Carlton, young Paternoster, of Berwick fame, batted very nicely, his score of 58 being four times more than his next best— 14, credited to Rost, and also to Delves, both of whom were not out. The New Zealand player, Reese, was Melbourne's chief bowler three of the six Carlton wickets falling to him.10
  • 30 Nov 1917: Mrs E. Huggard, of Toolamba, has received official word from the Base Records Office that her son, Private R. G. Huggard has, for the second time, been mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's military despatches for conspicuous bravery. Private Huggard is a nephew of Mr and Mrs M. Paternoster, Tatura, and had lived with them from the time he was 18 months old until he enlisted. Richard Gordon Huggard11
  • 25 Sep 1922: A NEW BUSINESS VENTURE. The New Wattle Tea Rooms.
A house of beauty and business has taken the place of the piece of land so long vacant in Fryers Street next to James Fairleys emporium. This is the Wattle Tea-Rooms of Mr. Matthew Paternoster (late of Tatura), whose experience in business concerns has been wide and successful. What he has established now in this town will supply a long felt necessity, and everybody who visits the establishment will readily notice how well he has done matters—everything in first-class, up-to-date style. For several weeks past this elegant building has been progressing towards completion, the builder being Mr. W. E. Richardson, of Welsford Street; and finality was reached on Saturday last sufficiently to enable its being thrown open to the public. And the public availed itself of the opportunity to an extent that must have been very gratifying to Mr. Paternoster, for during the afternoon the rooms
were crowded. Many had to wait outside before they could secure entrance, while good business was also done during the evening. The fact that so many had to wait was only an initial disability that will soon be overcome, for the management intends to leave nothing undone that will lend to the convenience and comfort of its patrons.
An outside view of the building is very striking because of its architectural features, with the windows, each 9 ft. in length; harmonising aesthetically with the surroundings. The top portion consists of lead lights; the fittings are of the latest improved style; and with cakes and confectionery, fancy chocolate boxes and other articles in artistic array in those windows, one almost feels an involuntary push from behind to go inside the tea rooms. Very well; that cannot be helped in such circumstances. And what do you behold? First of all, two shop counters with oilcloth tops, and two Dayton computing scales, while against the walls are shelves well laden with necessaries and luxuries.
This department is under the assistant manageress, Miss A. Huggard. Then the visitor enters the main portion of the building—the tea rooms, so bright and airy, and so calculated to give zest to the appetite. There are 14 tables, each with a fancy cover and each having in
the centre a small vase containing wattle sprays. New chairs are round those tables, on the walls are three large mirrors, six smaller ones and six hat racks with the light yellow tinting of the walls producing a happy effect. The waitresses are four in number, all in uniform costume, to represent the wattle and the lady in charge is Mrs Paternoster.
In the further portion of the building it is quite a pleasure to witness what has been achieved. To commence with the kitchen with hot and cold water services laid on with its array of brand new cups, saucers and plates (white and gold) and all necessary appurtenances. A few steps further back and you come to the combined cake and sponge making machine driven by motor and the electric ice cream freezer on a concrete floor. Another step and you enter the bakehouse, for everything is baked on the premises under strictly hygienic principles. And from the bakehouse and the kitchen there is a private
side passage leading to the tea rooms to enable pies and other good things to be served hot and appetisingly. Mr Paternoster intends to make still further improve ments and before very long he will be installing a soda fountain. Mary Jane McNabb, Alice Sophie Alma Huggard12
  • 21 Feb 1924: Shepparton General Sessions. RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY. MAN SENTENCED TO NINE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.
SHEPPARTON. — At Shepparton General Sessions, before Judge Woinarski, Matthew Paternoster was charged with stealing sugar and petrol from Fairley Bros., merchants, and alternatively with receiving these goods knowing them to have been stolen. Mr. Leon prosecuted and Mr. Brennan defended.
Evidence of two young men, former employes of Fairley's, was to the effect that Paternoster, who was a pastry cook and a tenant of Fairley's, had instigated them to steal the goods in question and hand them over to him, for which they had been convicted at Shepparton police court on 15th January and treated as first offenders.
    A. W. Fairley, a member of the firm, deposed that accused had admitted getting the goods. He promised to make complete restitution, provided the firm would not prosecute. Fairley's evidence was corroborated by Sergeant Hedger and Constable Perry, to each of whom accused had made similar admissions.
Accused went into the witness box and denied the allegations, deposing that during his interview with Fairley he had described the two young men as liars. FairIey, recalled, denied that accused had so expressed himself.
The case lasted all day Tuesday, the judge deferring his summing up till Wednesday morning. His review of the evidence was decidedly against accused, he acceded to Mr. Brennan's representation that two out of the eight charges against accused should be withdrawn. At Mr. Brennan's request, the judge also recalled the jury, and instructed them that in the count where the evidence of the two accomplices was given in support of one or the other only one testimony need be taken into account, leaving it to the jury to say which they should adopt.
The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on seven of the counts and of guilty on the eighth count, that of receiving a tin of petrol knowing it to have been stolen.
Accused was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, the judge remarking that receiving stolen property was a most dangerous crime, and must he put down. The accused is well known throughout the district, and his case created great interest.13

  • 18 Jul 1888: DANDENONG COUNTY COURT, TUESDAY, JULY 17, 1888. Before His Honor Judge Chomley and a jury of four.
William Brisbane v. John Robert Wilson; debt, £32 9s. 9d., for commission on the sale of 88½ acres of land at Beaconsfield, belonging to defendant.—Mr. Johnston appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Leon instructed by Mr. Cleverdon, appeared for the defendant.—In this case the plaintiff (Brisbane) sought to recover the sum of £32 9s. 9d. as comission on 88½ acres of land, which he alleges he was authorised to sell for the defendant, J. R. Wilson.—The plaintiff said he was authorised by a conversation ot the 7th April, in this year, by defendant, at the Beaconsfield railway station, to sell the land in question at £15 per acre. The terms were to be half cash, and the balance in two years bearing 6% interest. Under this authority Brisbane sold the land to Dr. L L. Smith. The defendant denied having given plaintiff any authority to sell the land, and tried to prove that Brisbane was acting in the best interests of Dr. L. L. Smith, who was employing him at a salary of £400 a year and dinner given in.—Mr John Ryan, who was then a stationmaster at Beaconsfield, but now removed to Pakenham, was called to corroberate plaintiff as to part of the conversation as to the terms. Mr. Glascock, Brighton, gave evidence as to subsequent conversation in reference to defendant asking plaintiff when he would require possession of the property.—For the defence it was urged that Wilson had given Brisbane no authority to sell, but that he had taken upon himself to do so on the strength of a casual conversation, between Wilson and himself.—The jury, after half an hour's deliberation, returned a verdict for the plaintiff with £12 6s. 6d. costs. • 7 Oct 1903: Saturday, 26th inst. Robert John Boyne, Secretary of Australian Mortgage Land and Finance Company, Limited, owners of Canally Station, versus Balranald P. P. Board Respondent. Grounds of appeal.— That the assessment is not in accordance with the provisions of the Pastures Protection Act 1902.
Mr. Fredrick Edmund Vandeleur, Manager of Canally Station for appellents (by consent), Mr. Robertson for Respondent.
Frederick Edmund Vandeleur gave evidence — I am the manager of Canally Station the property of the A. M. L. and P. Company Limited and reside at Canally, near Balranald. Canally Station is within the Police District of Balranald. This holding is in the Balranald Pastures Protection District, The A. M. L. and F Company is the Appellant in this case and I appear for them. The total area is 552,303 acres the area 256, 876 acres is enclosed with a wire netted rabbit proof fence, no area is cultivated. There are some abandoned Crown lands viz. reanmed area of Tapio, Tarlee, and I think a portion of Mallee Cliffs which adjoin the holding, but 1 do not know the average of these abandoned lands. The Canally holding consists of 300,000 acres Mallee, about 20,000 acres of flooded country, about 5,000 acres salt bush and the balance open plains and scalded country, the holding has about 12 miles double fiontage to the Murrumbidgee, about 30 miles to the Murray and 6 miles to the Wakool and is also watered by tanks. The watering by the rivers in 1902 was of a permanent character but most of the tanks were useless due to silting up and want of rainfall, a few of the tanks that had water were rendered useless by the absence of feed I have been engaged 33 years in pastoral pursuits 4 years of which has been at Canally and I have known portion of this part of Riverina for 20 years. Omitting feeding on scrub and artificial feeding which we did for a long time, the natural grasses would not have carried 10,000 sheep from 1st January to 31st December 1902 on the average. • 19 May 1886: I am also informed that Mr. Fuller, hay and corn merchant, of South Yarra, has bought the brick cottage owned by the late George Miller for the decent sum of £450. Mr. Fuller has made a lot of improvements and intends building two more rooms, which will, when finished, be a very commodious residence, quite close to the railway station. On dit also rumors that Mrs Robinson, of South Yarra has purchased about ten acres of the paddock adjoining Mr. Fuller's, and intends also to erect a commodious cottage thereon. George Miller17
  • 25 Aug 1888: CR FULLER. WILLIAM FULLER was born in Essex, England, on the 9th November 1833, and served six years in London as a carpenter.
He came to the colony in 1853 and engaged in the building trade till 1862. Cr Fuller was one of forty who subscribed for the first banner to commemorate the eight hours' boon. He subsequently went into the brewing and distilling business and was engaged in that capacity by Murcutt, Terry & Co, in Flinders-street, and also at South Yarra, in the premises now occupied as a jam factory. He afterwards opened the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel in Toorak road, which was then called the Sir Charles Darling. He received the appointment of inspector of licensed premises by the Government, but lost that appointment in consequence of the Black Wednesday episode. He then engaged in the hay, corn and produce business which he is still carrying on successfully in the Toorak-road, employing a large number of hands, and having many of the latest improvements in machinery. Cr Fuller was first elected to the Prahran council in 1874 and remained in the council till 1877. He was president of the Southern Railway league and took a very active part in bringing the Gippsland railway through Prahran. He served several years in the volunteer corps and was very prominent in bringing about a settlement of their claims for land certificates which the then, government paid in cash, in lieu of land. Mr Fuller has been twice married, his first wife being Miss Isabella Doubleday, whom he married in 1865. This lady died in 1875; of the marriage there was an issue of three sons and one daughter. Cr Fuller married again to Miss Amelia Wallis, eldest daughter of the late Thomas Wallis, the surviving issue being two sons and one daughter. Cr Fuller built the South Yarra hall which supplied a great want, there being no place in which a meeting could be held in South Yarra, with the exception of the hotels.
Cr Fuller is a frank and sterling man, and enjoys the goodwill and esteem of his fellow citizens, who heartily congratulate him on the honorable position he has so deservedly secured.18
  • 18 Oct 1889: Mr. William Fuller "A SELF MADE MAN."
A genial citizen, of sterling and upright character who has done good, if unobtrusive work, towards building up the colony of Victoria, has been recently elected to the office of mayor of the important city of Prahran, in the person of Mr. William Fuller. The future Australian citizen was born in Essex on November 9, 1833, and after serving a six years' apprenticeship as a carpenter, in London, landed in Victoria a lad of 19 years, in the middle of 1853. For some years after his arrival Mr. Fuller was employed in building, the Bank of New South Wales, Collins street, and the Parliament Houses—begun in '56 or '57— being amongst the edifices upon which he was engaged. This period of his life was varied by excursions to "The Diggings," especially to the Blackwood field beyond Bacchus Marsh, in all of which Mr. Fuller was singularly and persistently unlucky, Fate evidently intending that he should acquire fortune in some slower mode than by a stroke of the pick. In the year 1856, Mr. Fuller was one of 40 who subscribed for the first banner to commemorate the establishment of the Eight Hours Principle. In 1862 Mr. Fuller entered the employment of Messrs. Murcutt, Terry and Company, whose brewery was situated in Flinders street, and who also had premises in South Yarra, now occupied by the Red Cross Preserving Company. The business is now a limited liability company under the style and title of the West End Brewery. Mr. Fuller afterwards went into business for himself, and in the year 1877, he was appointed by the Victorian Government Inspector of Licensed premises. In February 1878, he, in common with so many other civil servants was made a victim of Black Wednesday. Mr Fuller again went into business in 1879, but has now retired in favour of his eldest son and his former partner, who continue the business of grain merchants in Toorak Road, South Yarra, where a large number of hands are employed, with all the latest improvements in ma-chinery. Mr Fuller was an ardent volunteer when the movement first began in Victoria. He joined the Southern Rifles in 1865, and served several years in that corps. Afterwards he took a prominent part in effecting a settlement of the claims of volunteers for land certificates pursuant to an Act of Parliament which was passed in 1862, by the terms of which any volunteer who had served five years was entitled to 50 acres of land. These claims the Government of the time showed some disposition to repudiate. Ultimately the Francis Ministry paid the claims in cash in lieu of land, and Mr Fuller published in pamphlet form the whole of the correspondence between himself and the Government, which had dragged itself along slowly over the years 1872-73. Mr Fuller was first elected to the Prahran Town Council in 1874, but resigned the position on receiving his Government appointment in 1877. He was President of the Southern Railway League, and took an active part in bringing the Gipps-land railway through Prahran. He built the South Yarra Hall on land which he owned in that suburb, and it has proved a great boon, as formerly there was no place in which a concert or dance could be held outside of hotels. Mr Fuller was re-elected to the Prahran Town Council in August, 1888, and has now been chosen to fill the important position of Mayor. Mr Fuller has been twice married - first in 1865 to Miss Isabella Doubleday, who died in 1875, leaving three sons and one daughter; and, secondly, in 1876 to Miss Amelia Wallis, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Wallis, of South Yarra, by whom there are two sons and one daughter. None of his children are married. Mr Fuller gave his inaugural banquet on Monday evening, October 14th, when more than 200 guests were present. His Excellency Sir William Robinson, who had accepted an invitation to be present, was unavoidably prevented from attending, but Sir Benjamin Benjamin, Sir James MacBain, the Hon. M. H. Davies. the Hon. J. B. Patterson, Messrs E. J. Dixon, J. Harris and J. Turner, M.L.A's., Mr Justice A'Beckett and Mr Justice Hodges, with a host of mayors and councillors from neighbouring municipalities, were amongst other prominent citizens present. The tables were very beautifully set out. Altogether the banquet given by Mr William Fuller on Monday night should be classed as second in importance to the great annual gathering in the Melbourne Town Hall.19

  • 16 Aug 1902: The death is recorded this week of Mr. William Fuller, at his late residence, 'Cardenia, ' Beaconsfield, in his 72nd year. The late Mr. Fuller was for many years a resident of South Yarra, where be built up a prosperous business as a hay and corn merchant, and was identified with many local movements. So popular did he become, and so much public spirit did he evince, that he was persuaded to stand for and entered the Prahran council on the division of the city into wards in the year 1888. He retired in 1898. The deceased gentleman was appointed Mayor in 1889-90, and entertained during his term of office Lord Hopetoun.
The ex-councillor discharged the duties of chief magistrate in a manner alike honorable to himself, and satisfactory to his colleagues and the citizens at large. Subsequently he resigned his position and retired to his farm at Beaconsfield, "Cardinia," where he always extended a hearty welcome to any of his friends from Prahran. Mr. Fuller was a simple minded honest man who without guile did his duty manfully and well, and his death is regretted by all who knew him. His body was brought to Melbourne and interred in the General cemetery yesterday.24

  • 2 Mar 1904: Saturday, 5th March 1904. Half-past 3 o'clock. On the property. AT MRS. FULLER'S BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN HOME AND FARM. ON THE CARDINIA CREEK. Two miles from Berwick, and two miles from Lower Beaconsfield Station. W. S. KEAST & CO. have received instructions from Mrs. Amelia Fuller, executrix in the estate of W. Fuller, deceased, to sell by public auction, That beautiful home known as "Cardinia," situated on the Cardinia Creek, consisting of a 10-roomed brick villa, with all the latest modern attachments. The rooms are all large and well finished regardless of cost. The outbuildings consist of stable, large hay shed, cow stables, piggery, blacksmith's shop, and buggy sheds. The land consists of 90 acres, mostly rich black flats, subdivided into eight paddocks, including an orchard of close on four acres, mostly young trees. The land has been down in grass for a number of years, most of which has been ploughed, and is fit for agriculture or dairying. It would make a splendid dairy farm if sown in English grasses. The homestead is quite a picture, standing in perfect position, with a splendid view of all the surrounding country. A nice carriage drive from the main road to the house, along a plantation of magnificent pines, with a garden very neatly laid out in front. For a gentleman or lady wishing to live retired, or to anyone in search of a good home, we can recommend this property as one of the best that has been offered by our firm for years. Very liberal terms will be given, which will come within the reach of any person with moderate means. Orders to view can be obtained from us on application. Further particulars apply to W. S. Keast & Co., 608 Collins-street.20
  • 18 May 1904: On Thursday a "book evening" and social will be held in the Mechanics' Institute, Berwick, to bid farewell to Mrs. Fuller and family, who are leaving Lower Beaconsfield at the end of the month.21

Note*1937 CORONER’S INQUEST (typed) into the death of Donald Neil McDonald. ____________ VICTORIA, TO WIT This Deponent Percival Wallis Fuller On his oath saith, I am a Motorman in the employ of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Residing at 27 Swanson Street, Geelong. On the 9th September, 1937, I was Motorman on tramcar No. 2 when it left the terminus at East Geelong at 6.19p.m. on the trip to the city and was traveling in Queenscliff Road in a westerly direction. When about a quarter of a mile from the terminus, I was casting down hill at a speed of about 15 m.p.h. when I noticed, about half a mile ahead, a motor vehicle approaching with two bright headlights showing. The motorist passed a horsedrawn jinker when it was some hundreds of yards away from the tram, and in doing so swung on to the centre of the track. I sounded the gong violently and applied the air brake, slowing the tram down to about 10 m.p.h. The motorist, driving erratically, appeared to make an attempt to clear the tram track, but again swung back on to the centre of the track when about 100 feet away from the tram. I immediately applied full emergency brake and had slowed down to about 3 m.p.h. I noticed the motorist was traveling at a fast speed, estimated to be from 40-50 m.p.h., and he did not slacken speed at all and came on to strike the front of the tram head on. The time was then about 6.22 p.m. The visibility was fair, with light rain falling. The tram traveled only about 4-5 feet after the collision, and the front wheels of the tram were derailed after impact. The whole of the bonnet up to the dash board, except near side front wheel, of the motor car was crushed under the front bumper of the tram. I went to the driver’s assistance, but found him unconscious, leaning against the door on the driving side. I asked Conductor Atkins to call an ambulance, which arrived shortly after, and the police were also notified, and took the motorist to hospital.
VICTORIA, TO WIT This Deponent Percival Wallis Fuller On his oath saith, I am a Motorman residing at 27 Swanson Street, Geelong away from the tram when the accident occurred. I saw the car pass the cart. It passed about 60 yards from the tram. I made no measurements of distances. The motorist was traveling very fast. The usual speed of a tram is 15-18 miles per hour. I was traveling at 15 mph. traveling at 15 mph under these conditions I could pull the tram up in 20 feet. I did not notice a light on Dellers [sic – the horse & cart] vehicle Mr Dooley / I have never measured the distance it takes to pull up a tram which is traveling at 12 to 15 mph I have never made a test. P.W. Fuller
