  • 19 Oct 1901: NICHOL.—In loving remembrance of my dear husband and also our dear father, Andrew Nichol, who departed this life at Thornton on the 18th October, 1900.
    One less at home.
    The charmed circle broken— a dear face Missed day by day from its accustomed place.
    But cleansed and saved and perfected by grace.
    One more in heaven.
    One less on earth,
    Its pain, its sorrow and its toil to share;
    One less the pilgrim's daily cross to bear;
    One more the crown of ransomed saints to wear,
    At home in heaven.

Newspaper-Articles

  • 1 Oct 1896: DEATH OF MR J. C. RYAN. SUDDEN END OF AN OLD PUBLIC SERVANT.
    Mr. John Carroll Ryan, the Hamilton Post and Telegraph Master, died at an early hour on Tuesday morning. The residents of Hamilton were shocked and grieved when the sad and altogether unexpected news was passed round the town, all save, Mr. Ryan's intimates bring unaware that he had been in a very critical state of health. His death was surrounded by most painful circumstances, and amidst general regret expressed at the removal of an active and popular public servant, the deepest concern is felt for his sorrowing family upon whom his end came with stunning suddenness. The deceased gentleman had suffered from bronchitis for a considerable period prior to the recent winter, but though he was confined to his room occasionally for a few days, the complaint did not appear to affect his general health seriously. During this winter he was afflicted with an unusually severe attack, and also by distressing asthmatical symptoms and his constitution was severely shaken. Mr. Ryan recovered sufficiently to go abroad and was not relieved in the management of his office until he was granted his annual holiday some eight days ago. Mr. Matthews then took charge, but Mr. Ryan was so ill that be could not start on his proposed top for the benefit of his health. In the course of a week, Dr. Hayes, his medical adviser, and his family were pleased to find that he was again able to get about, and it was arranged that be should travel to Melbourne by the excursion train which left Hamilton on Tuesday. On Monday evening Mr. Ryan, was in good spirits, and he stayed up for some time chatting with the members of his family and a visitor. Afterwards retiring to rest with the full intention of departing by the train at noon on Tuesday. During the night and the early hours, of the morning Mrs. Ryan attended to the fire, expecting that he might require something, as he had not slept well for some time. As the morning came in, she remarked that he appeared to have dropped into the soundest sleep that he had enjoyed for many weeks, but later on, becoming alarmed at his appearance, she examined his face more closely. The unfortunate lady then discovered that her husband was dead, and it is, therefore, impossible to say at what hour death took place. The immediate cause of death was syncope, the deceased's heart having apparently failed through tbe exhaustion produced by severe attacks of bronchitis and asthma.
    Mr. John Carroll Ryan was one of the oldest officers in the service of the Victorian Postal Department, and had one of the best records in the service. He was born in Templemore, county of Tipperary, Ireland, in 1842, and was an orphan at the early age of seven years, his father, Mr. Stephen Ryan, and his mother both having died without attaining ripe years. Acting on the advice of his friends he came to Victoria in 1861 and joined the Public Service in the following year. Mr. Ryan was first engaged in the Portland district, where he made friends of many people who are old identities now. He also became acquainted with several Sonth Australians, notably tbe Rev. E. Tennison Woods and his brother, Mr. Terence Woods. The latter gentleman was appointed telegraph master at Mount Gambier, which was a joint station on the only line connecting Melbourne with Adelaide. Mr. Ryan was the Victorian representative at this important post for some little time. In April, 1871 , he married in Adelaide Miss Lallan, the lady whose charitable disposition has endeared her to many friends in Hamilton. Mr. Ryan afterwards went to Gippsland, where he was engaged in departmental work for many years. He was stationed at Bendigo for some time, and subsequently returned to Gippsland, where he remained in charge of the Warragul office for some years, making that part of the country his home, and investing in real estate there. He came to the Hamilton office in March, 1890, more than 6 years ago, and was in harness here up till within a few days of his untimely death.
    The deceased gentleman was a prominent member of tbe Roman Catholic Church. His official position precluded him from taking an active part in public matters, but he rendered valuable assistance in the management of the local Hospital, and successfully promoted several affairs for the benefit of that institution. He extended a whole hearted support to the public institutions of the various towns in which he resided, and was regarded as a worthy citizen and a courteous and obliging official, who was always anxious to make his department as serviceable as possible to the requirements of the people. With his sorrowing family he leaves many warm friends in Hamilton and district, who will sadly miss the genial and always obliging Postmaster from their midst.
    The remains of the deceased were removed from his late residence to St Mary's Church last night. Mass will be celebrated this morning, and the funeral will leave the Church at 3 o'clock p.m.4
